My Message

Year number 10! A decade of climbing!!!

For the last 9 years I have participated in the Hustle Up the Hancock in Chicago, climbing all 94 flights of the Hancock Building. I did it, and continue to do it, in honor of my brother Eric, who died on January 20, 2008 and in honor of my father, Randy Gold, who died on July 1, 2013.

Three years ago, our family was recognized by the Hustle Up the Hancock with the "Making A Difference" Hustle up the Hancock award in recognition of our outstanding contribution in the fight against lung disease. I can’t express how much it meant to receive that award, especially knowing that my dad was alive to see it. That award was possible thanks to all of your donations and I will be forever grateful for your support. I was the 3rd top fundraiser in 2014 and last year was the 2nd top fundraiser! Let’s keep those donations coming!

For those of you who don’t know my brother’s story, please read below, and for those who would like to know my dad’s story, please feel free to message me.

After a successful double lung transplant during his graduate program (speech and language pathology) at Northwestern University, Eric competed in his first half-marathon and had participated in the Hustle in 2005, 2006, and 2007. He had been scheduled to participate in 2008, but he died a month before the event. I (along with other family members and Eric's friends) participated in his place that year after his death and we have had a team of 13-17 climbers every year for the last 5 years. Unfortunately my dad's health has left him unable to climb the last 3 years, and most likely he will never climb again. Therefore I am not only climbing for my brother, but I am climbing for my dad, who was the one who made sure that this climb continues to happen for my brother's honor.
Eric's new lungs had what is known as CMV, a virus that exists in many people, but lies dormant unless an individual is being treated with immunosuppressant therapy. While the CMV would arise on occasion, the doctors were able to contain the CMV. Unfortunately, Eric was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in July 2007. The anti-viral medications he was required to take interfered with the effectiveness of the chemotherapy and radiation, and the cancer spread to his lungs. When the anti-viral medications were decreased to allow the chemotherapy to hopefully work, the CMV became uncontrollable and he died from CMV pneumonia.
In addition to competing in the Hustle, Eric helped co-found a children's diabetic camp in Brandon, Florida, was a speaker for the American Lung Association and a professional photographer. He accomplished a great deal in his 26 years, and giving back to the community was always one of his top priorities.
Thank you for visiting my personal fundraising page! Your support is appreciated as I participate in the 2017 Hustle Up the Hancock. All donations will support the mission of Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago to promote healthy lungs and fight lung disease through research, advocacy and education.
